Live-in Caregivers (LICG)

LICG are individuals who are qualified to provide care for children, elderly persons or persons with disabilities in private homes without supervision, who must live in the private home where they work in Canada. Both the employer and the employee must follow several steps to meet the requirements of the Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP):


  • LICG must have a positive Labour Market Opinion (LMO) from an employer in Canada
  • Have a signed contract with the future employer
  • Applied for a Canadian work permit before entering Canada
  • Have an equivalent of Canadian secondary-school education
  • Six months full-time training in a classroom OR 1 year full-time work (6 months continuous same employer), in the past 3 years
  • Good knowledge of English or French
  • Have temporary resident valid status
  • Have a work permit as LICG
  • Have entered Canada as LICG
  • Worked full-time as LICG for 2-years or 3900 hours over 22 months in the four years after entry
  • No Removal Orders or administrative hearings, appeal, judicial review (LICG and family members) pending
  • Must not have misrepresented education, training or experience
